The New Fly Fisher – Our Team

Ian James
Co-Host / Professional tyer, guide, Scottish Casting Association Instructor.

Ian is the show's resident fly-tying expert. One of Ontario's foremost fishing guides and instructors, he also wrote the Canadian bestseller Fumbling with a Flyrod. Ian is well known for his down-to-earth teaching methods and his no-guff, no-bull approach to fly fishing; he calls a spade a spade and a strike indicator a bobber. Ian is also an innovative and award-winning fly tier. His Muncher Nymph has become a "modern day
classic," a successful pattern for many species of fish across North America from brown trout to steelhead, salmon, bass and carp.

Professionally, Ian was the first certified full-time fly-fishing guide on Ontario's renowned Grand River. In 1993, he was part of the Canadian Team at both the World and the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships. Back in the early 1980s Ian pioneered fly fishing for carp. Today many of the techniques he developed, and the flies he created to catch carp, are considered standard practice. Around the globe, he is known as "The Carpfather".

Ian is one of Canada's most respected fly-fishing guides, casting instructors and professional fly tiers. He is also well known for his quick wit, dry Scottish humour, his entertaining seminars and his laugh-out-loud website http://www3.sympatico.ca/ianjames
